What is CEED?
The Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is India’s premier national-level entrance examination for admission to Master of Design (M.Des.) and selected Ph.D. in Design programmes offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), IISc Bangalore, and other leading design institutions. Conducted annually, CEED evaluates a candidate’s creativity, design aptitude, visual perception, logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and drawing ability rather than prior technical design knowledge.
CEED Eligibility
To appear for CEED, candidates generally must:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree, Diploma, or Postgraduate degree of at least 3 years duration after Class 12, or be in the final year of such a programme.
- There is no age limit for appearing in the examination.
- There is no restriction on the number of attempts.
Important: While you may be eligible to take the CEED exam, each participating institute has its own admission eligibility criteria for M.Des. programmes. Candidates should verify the specific requirements of the institutes they wish to apply to before submitting applications.

FAQ's
What is the exam pattern of CEED?
CEED consists of two parts:
- Part A: Computer-based test with questions on visualization, logical reasoning, design aptitude, observation, language, and numerical ability.
- Part B: Drawing and design questions that evaluate creativity, sketching, problem-solving, and visual communication skills.
Candidates must qualify Part A for their Part B answers to be evaluated.
Is sketching important for CEED?
Yes. Sketching plays a vital role in Part B of the examination. Candidates should practice perspective drawing, human figures, product sketching, storyboarding, and visualization to improve their performance.
How long does it take to prepare for CEED?
Most students prepare for 4 to 8 months, depending on their current drawing skills, creativity, and aptitude. A structured study plan with regular practice and mock tests significantly improves performance.
Do engineering students appear for CEED?
Yes. Many engineering graduates choose CEED to pursue an M.Des. degree and build careers in Product Design, UX/UI Design, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, and Design Research.
Does qualifying CEED guarantee admission?
No. A valid CEED score makes you eligible to apply, but most institutes also conduct portfolio reviews, design assignments, studio tests, and personal interviews before offering final admission.
